Powder Bulk Properties

Bulk characteristics of a powder determine how it will behave during handling, processing and storage. It is influenced by a combination of individual particle characteristics (like size and shape) and environmental factors (such as moisture and aeration). By analysing the powder flowability and apparent density, we can ensure consistent product quality, process efficiency and overall reliability.

Powder Flowability Testing Services

Flow behaviour makes or breaks your powder’s performance. Our flowability testing services deliver precise, repeatable measurements to support quality control, material selection and process optimisation. By understanding flow characteristics, you can:

  • Reduce material handling issues
  • Improve consistency and throughput
  • Prevent process interruptions
  • Make informed decisions on powder selection

Why Flowability Matters

Powder flow characteristics are essential for consistent performance in additive manufacturing, thermal spraying, metal injection moulding and coating processes. Poor flow can cause clogs, dosing issues or defects in final parts.

At Powderloop, we offer standardised flow rate and density testing to help you understand how your powder behaves in real-world applications. This ensures every batch meets production and handling requirements.

How We Measure Flowability

Powder Mass Flow Rate

We use precision flowmeters to assess the time taken for 50 grams of powder to pass through a funnel under controlled conditions.

  • Hall Funnel (2.5 mm orifice) is used for free-flowing powders.
  • Carney Funnel (5.0 mm orifice) is used for fine or less free-flowing powders.

This simple yet effective test helps determine whether a powder will handle well in your process or require adjustments.

Apparent Density

Apparent density is the mass of a loosely packed powder divided by its volume. We measure this using a calibrated 25cc density cup filled under flowmeter-controlled conditions. This value is crucial for:

  • Material dosing.
  • Predicting compaction behaviour.
  • Understanding powder handling characteristics.

International Standards We Follow

We conduct flowability testing in line with internationally recognised ASTM and ISO standards to ensure reliable, repeatable, and comparable results.
